We will present a traditional Peruvian dance from the region Huamachuco - LA CONTRADANZA. It is an ancestral dance from the Huamachuco area, characterized by its rapid pace composed of many steps. According to historians, this dance originated as a parody of the dances of the Spaniards during the viceregal era. The natives used to dance it secretly mocking the dances of the Spaniards. In the beginning this dance was danced only by the peasants, who with strength and energy demonstrated all their feelings. Currently the Contradanza is danced by men and women and in different parts of Peru. The typical dress is described as follows: a palm hat with a mirror and a colorful ribbon at the edge, followed by a jacket with crossed ribbons, also a small multi colored skirt, a woolen black trousers, black long socks and shoes and roasted nuts tied to the knees. It’s usually danced with a stick in a hand.
